Dismantling Racism

Church is the place we come to be equipped to live the love and justice of Jesus in the world.  Below are links to concrete actions and resources we can tap, as we work together to dismantle racism and build God’s Beloved Community.

Economic Support for Communities of Color

One way to promote economic equity is by intentionally supporting businesses owned by people of color. Use the link below to find Black-owned bookstores and consider seeking out other businesses led by entrepreneurs of color in your community.

Buy your books from a Black-owned bookstore.

If you order books online, check out https://bookshop.org, an online independent book seller. You can select a bookstore to benefit from your purchase – which means you could purchase from a black-owned bookstore, even it you don’t have one in your own neighborhood.

Get to know the Indigo Arts Alliance in Portland, a local organization “cultivating the artistic development of people of black and brown descent.” https://indigoartsalliance.me/

Support Royalties for Spirituals here at FCC UCC:   Historically, the composers of African American Spirituals were neither known nor compensated for use of their songs. The FCC UCC music department has committed to paying forward a ‘royalty’ each time we include a Spiritual in worship. Funds are donated to the Indigo Arts Alliance: https://indigoartsalliance.me/. You are invited to contribute, as well. Select the “other” category when you give online, and mark your contribution as “Royalty for Spirituals.” Thank you.

Learning Our Own History

Join us in digging into the history of our own region. Check out the work of Atlantic Black Box, “Researching and reckoning with New England’s role in colonization and enslavement.” Learn about the WhereWalks that have been held in our area, and watch for future offerings.

Connect with the Wabanaki Alliance, and support Wabanaki efforts to have their sovereignty recognized in the state of Maine. The FCC UCC Mission Team is a member of the Wabanaki Alliance Coalition. Learn more on our Wabanaki Working Group page.
