Ministers

John B. McCall
Senior Minister

John has served as senior minister of our church here on Meetinghouse Hill since 1989 and is the second longest-serving pastor in our history of more than 275 years. He grew up in a parsonage family — both parents were UCC ministers — and lived in seven places  from west coast to Midwest before he finished high school. He graduated from Beloit College in Wisconsin and the Chicago Theological Seminary and was ordained in 1971. Continuing his eastward drift, he finished his doctoral studies while serving South Congregational UCC in Concord, NH, and received his D. Min. from Andover Newton Theological School in 1985.

He’s the  father of three sons: Seth, who lives in New Hampshire, Jeremiah who lives in Ohio, and Ben who lives in Maine. His wife Andrea, also a UCC minister, is Director of Service Learning & Community Engagement, and Interfaith Chaplain, at the University of Southern Maine. They both love South Portland and are happy to call it home. Contact John at 799-3361 or by email.

Diane L. Harvey

Transitional Minister

Diane has just joined us (September, 2102) as Transitional Minister, and will serve our congregation through the search, call, and settlement of a new Senior Minister following John McCall’s retirement in June, 2013.

After 25 years of settled ministry serving three different congregations in Minnesota, Diane moved to Maine in 2006 to specialize in Interim and Transitional Ministry.  South Portland is her fourth interim, and she is excited to be sharing with John McCall and the congregation in this time of change and new possibilities.

Her life’s journey has taken Diane from New England where she was born, raised and attended college to the West Coast where she attended seminary, worked as a hospital chaplain and was ordained in 1981, then to Minnesota and now back to New England.  Two highlights of her ministry have been the opportunity to serve as volunteer staff at Iona Abbey, on the island of Iona, Scotland, and to preach with a Swahili translator at a village congregation in Isimani, Tanzania.

Diane and her husband, the Rev. John Heinl, a retired UCC minister now historical museum docent, live in Kittery Point, Maine.  Contact Diane at 799-3361 or by email.
