Spiritual Life and Worship Team
Minutes of January 8, 2015 Meeting
Attending: Dave A., Justin L., Sue S., Kathy S., Jim R., and Rev. Cindy Maddox
Sue opened the meeting with a prayer
No December meeting minutes available for review.
Due to database errors the list for inactive members was incorrect. The office is waiting for an update to our “Church Windows” program before running the report again.
Cindy finds it very time consuming to review the welcome pads from Sunday’s service each week, and she is not familiar enough with the congregation to pick up any “drop outs.” Maria is keeping an attendance record from the welcome pads, and Kathy and Jim will review to watch for those “regulars” who are no longer attending.
We will begin a new informal worship service on the 3rd Sunday of February. It will begin with a pot-luck supper at 5 pm, followed by worship beginning at 6 pm.
EF&G will host the February supper. John Shoos will provide guitar accompaniment for singing.
Budget for 2015 is currently $50,000 short with current pledges. All Team budgets were cut. Will have an open conversation following worship on Sunday,
Jan. 11, to get ideas on where other cuts can be made.
The church has received a gift of $25,000 each year for the next 3 years to allow Cindy to implement some new growth initiatives and programs. This will also be announced at the Sunday congregational conversation.
It has come to light that the ushers are not counting the children attending when counting worship service attendance. Cindy will survey other churches for local practices. Keep the item on agenda for future discussion.
Review of Christmas services – 300 attended the 5 pm service (included a baptism), 180 at 7 pm, and 140 at 10 pm. Family pictures shown were well received. Blue Christmas service, led by Bob Morse, very valuable for those attending (12), Chapel space worked well. Justin will research the fire codes re: using real candles during Christmas Eve service.
Betsy Keiter joined us to explain the Pastor-Parish Relations committee and solicit our feedback on staff.
Upcoming Lenten activities
Sue reminded everyone of the projects that they had volunteered for in September, and handed out copies of the notes for those projects from the SL&W Handbook.
Previous discussion regarding Ash Wednesday breakfast, led to a suggestion from the Council, to have the breakfast following the service rather than before. This year we will have the Ash Wednesday morning communion service at 7:30 am (as usual) followed by the continental breakfast at 8:00 am.
Next Meeting: February 5th at 6:30 pm
